What information should be provided during a plating kickoff meeting?

Our team at Master Finish will walk you through this process with a checklist. Typically, there are 5-7 things we will want to review with you, starting with part drawings, plating specifications, product use, appearance zones, packaging for part protection, required testing at launch, and continuous conformance requirements.

We will also want to work with you on how you would like our inspection team to sort product so we are aligned with your needs.

How does automated chrome plating improve consistency?

In the plating process, there are typically 20-40 steps, including cleaning, rinsing, and plating from start to completion. By running the process with PLC controls, all times and parameters, such as electrical power for the plating process, are better controlled than they can be by human hands. This helps reduce variations in the outcome of your plating.

How does digital rectification improve chrome plating quality?

Digital rectification can improve the precision of the process in several ways. Older analog units use silicon diodes to transform high-voltage AC energy into high-amperage DC energy. These units leave a lot of ripple in the DC current, which can cause inaccuracy when understanding the amount of energy being supplied to the parts in the plating process.

New digital switch-mode rectification is far more precise and produces DC energy without ripple. It can also be controlled with almost 100x greater precision. This allows for much better control of the metal deposit.

In addition to improved performance, these systems are also more efficient, converting 96-98% of the energy to the plating tanks. Older technology runs at 60-80% energy efficiency.

What advantages do automated chemical feed systems provide?

Historically, plating operators were required to perform chemical titration analysis to determine how much chemistry was being depleted daily from their tanks. After analyzing the chemistry, they could create an add sheet for line operators to add back the depleted material.

With line automation and automated feeders, we can microdose after each load leaves the tank based on the calculated consumption from that load. If we process 100-200 loads per day, this makes our chemical variation much smaller than a plating supplier that controls chemistry daily.

Reducing variation and improving control over chemistry helps create more repeatable and reliable products.

What should OEMs know before launching a new decorative chrome program?

OEMs and tiered suppliers should know there are many advantages to using electroplating to finish parts. Electroplating can have a lower carbon footprint than paint and organic coatings, create less waste, and provide better protection in many cases.

OEMs should also know that support is available from suppliers and trade organizations like NASF and CCAI.

What plating challenges are commonly discovered during prototype reviews?

There are a few categories of issues that can come up during the development phase of a product launch. These are important to understand and plan engineering controls around so you can improve the chances of avoiding problems.

Part geometry issues can occur when parts have sharp corners, fine edges, blind holes, longer lengths, thin sidewalls, flexible shapes, or Class A critical features on many exterior surfaces. These features can require engineering work to properly design plating racks and clips that minimize the impact of the part design on the plating process.

Rack and clip connection issues can occur when parts are not rigid or have no or limited areas where a rack witness mark is available. Parts that do not have a way to apply a spring-tension clip to connect the part to the rack can make holding the part in a secure position very difficult, if not impossible.

Some parts also have shapes that make it difficult or impossible to force the electrical current to drive to certain locations on the part surface. This can require the creation of a special electrical cell inside the plating chemical bath. Using this can increase costs and tooling costs, and it can limit which suppliers are capable of producing your part.

The key is to get a plating expert involved in the design process early so you can avoid costs and quality risks before they reach production.

How can engineers design parts for successful decorative chrome plating?

When designing a product for plating, make sure it can be submerged and then pulled out of water in the same orientation without pooling water anywhere. This keeps plating companies’ valuable chemicals in their own tanks.

Avoid sharp edges or points. These features increase current draw in the pointed area and can lead to burn. Sharp edges and corners should be rounded off or eliminated where possible.

What causes variation between plating suppliers?

One truth about the plating industry is that it is made up of shops of many different sizes, often specializing in a finish or two. Each shop has a plating line designed for its specific products, and the lines are all very different.

They can range from small shops where operators move racks by hand out of large containers to shops where the line is so large that you can plate an assembled car all at once. They can also range from one-off, one-at-a-time plating to fully automated, large systems with tanks designed so specifically that they can only run one thing or one type of thing.

There are a few important things to consider when setting up a production-volume system to ensure long-term success.

It starts with a good development process and taking the time to develop things correctly. This helps head off issues that may be missed in an early run.

A good plating rack maintenance system can help keep racks in good working order and ready for quality production. Consistent chemical maintenance is also key to process stability.

Open communication between the plating company and the company making the parts being plated is crucial for part quality outcomes. Changes to the metal supplier, processing methods, oils and lubes used in making the parts, and other parameters can cause issues in the plating process.
